ABI Technical Service

Energy Pro 22, Reference 22 & Reference Connesieur 22, Image Concept 200, & Mirage M1-1 Components

Welcome to the updated ABI Technical Service website! For over 30 years we have been supporting and servicing select models of the finest legacy loudspeakers produced in Canada by Audio Products International. That simple fact alone speaks volumes of both the performance and pedigree of these Canadian engineered products from a time when a product was equal parts engineering, and magic.

Tweeter Failure

The common failure mode for the Dual Hyperdome tweeter is long term thermal stress resulting in voice coil failure. The design life of the proprietary ferrofluid used in these tweeters is approximately 10-12 years. With time and ferrofluid degradation the tweeter not only does not sound as it was intended, it eventually suffers voice coil failure rendering the tweeter inoperative.

Ferrofluid and the Dual Hyperdome Tweeter

During the development of the Dual Hyperdome tweeter (with the assistance of the National Research Council) the ferrofluid used was specifically formulated and is very different than the widely used fluids such as APG512 used in other manufacturers components. All of our rebuilds use this proprietary formulation prepared by the same vendor API originally sourced the fluid from. This fluid is an integral component to, and the reason these tweeters sound like they do.

Rebuilding & Repair Service

The rebuild process has multiple stages and is extremely thorough. Some processes involved are proprietary and have been developed through years of experience with the dual hyperdome tweeters. This results in tweeter performance and matching to a much closer tolerance than was possible during the original manufacturing process. There is not any case where a tweeter cannot be returned to its original function no matter what its condition. In rare circumstances an extra charge may apply due to a major part being completely missing or damaged beyond repair. We maintain a complete inventory of spare parts as well as complete tweeters should you be missing your originals.

Warranty

ABI Technical Service is the sole factory authorized source for rebuilding these products.

Anyone else advertising their ability to rebuild them is quite simply telling you a lie. Having purchased the property, original production tooling, and all remaining parts and spares from Audio Products International prior to their sale to the Klipsch Corporation, we will continue to support these legacy products well into the future. This combined with 35 years of experience with these products ensures you a perfect rebuild to better than original factory standards and a warranty for as long as you own the product. I am fully committed to maintaining the sterling reputation, performance specifications, and upholding the level of support that has defined these legacy Canadian audio products.

Pricing

Full rebuilds for tweeters are $200.00 per unit. No quantity discounts are available. The $200.00 price has not increased in over 25 years. For context the original catalogue repair price published in 1990 was $181.90. Shipping charges are the actual charges for each package and include tracking and insurance for your protection.

Payment

Total charges will be calculated once repairs, testing, and packaging have been completed and your package is ready for return shipment. Payments can be made by email money transfer or PayPal to chris@abitech.ca.

Removing Tweeters

To remove the tweeters pry off the black foam trim on the face of the tweeter. This will reveal the mounting screws around the outer edge of the tweeter face. Depending on the model there will be three or four screws. Remove these then carefully prise the tweeter out of the cabinet. Do not under any circumstances remove the four inner screws on the face of the tweeter. The connecting wires are phased so they cannot be connected the wrong way around. Carefully disconnect the leads from the tweeter.

Packaging

Please be sure to individually wrap each tweeter in bubble wrap with a cardboard (or similar) spacer covering the cone or diaphragm face to avoid damage. Please do not use newspaper, "popcorn" style foam, or large air bag type packaging as the components have substantial mass and can work themselves loose during transit leading to damage. Small bubble wrap or foam sheet style packaging are the ideal to wrap your components in. The black ABS plastic faced models are particularly fragile and special attention should be paid to wrapping and packaging to avoid shipping damage. Failure to package properly may result in additional charges due to damage to the tweeter components.
